Close to 100 illustrations from the work of the best animal artists and engravers of the time. Many fine horse and dog sporting prints; several interesting illustrations of modern English farming equipment. Complete in one volume, including 12 Divisions and Index. Black leather spine and corners; marbled paper-on-boards; marbled edges and endpapers. [3842] Stanley, Thomas. History of Philosophy in 8 Parts. London: Humphrey Moseley and Thomas Dring, 4 to. 1656. Volume 2 only of 4 volumes. (The 4 volumes were published 1655, 1656, 1660 and 1662.) All 8 Parts are present, as are the 17 full-page engravings of philosophers. This to me is the best of the four volumes because it includes most of the major Greek philosophers. The First Part, containing those on whom the Attribute of Wise was conferred, includes: Thales, Solon. Chilon, Pittacus, Bias, Cleobulus, Periander, Sosiades, Ausonii Ludus, Anacharsis, Myson, Epimenides, and Pherecydes. The Second Part, containing the Jonick Philosophers, includes: Anaximander, Anaximenes, Anaxagoras, and Archelaus. The Third Part, containing the Socratick Philosophers, includes: Socrates, Xenophon, Aeschines, plus short mentions of Simon, Crito, Glaucon, Simmias and Cebes. The Fourth Part, containing the Cyrenaick, Megarick, Eleack and Eretriack Sects. Philosophers included in these shorter-lived schools were Aristippus, Hegesias, Anniceris, Theodorus, Bion, Euclid, Eubulides, Alexinus, Diodorus, Stilpo, Phaedo, and Menedemus. The Fifth Part, containing the Academick Philosophers, including: Plato, Speusippus, Xenocrates, Polemo, Crates, Crantor, Arcesilaus, Lacydes, Carneades, Clitomachus, Philo, and Antiochus. The Sixth Part, containing the Peripatetick Philosophers, includes: Aristotle, Theophrastus, Strato, Lyco, Aristo, Critolaus, and Diodorus. The Seventh Part, containing the Cynick Philosophers, includes: Antisthenes, Diogenes, Monimus, Onesicritus, Crates, Metrocles, Hipparchia, Menippus, and Menedemus. The Eighth Part, containing the Stoick Philosophers, includes: Zeno, Cleanthes, Chrysippus, Diogenes, Antipater, Panaetius, and Posidonius. Most of the philosophers in this volume have some information about their life and examples of their writings. Of course, the largest portions are allotted to Socrates, Plato, Aristotle and Zeno. The heavily-worn leather binding may be the original (no titling left on it). Heavy wear to edges and corners; pieces missing from top and bottom of spine; front outer hinge beginning to crack at bottom; front endpaper partly loose, has gift inscription from 1670 and several subtraction solutions written on it (mostly to do with how old the book is in terms of the time of figuring); light to moderate foxing throughout plus some ghosting; a couple of the portrait engravings have stains in the bottom margin but most engravings are very clean; some pencil notations here and there; last page torn and small piece missing from it; still considered a Good or better copy of this scarce first edition and important volume of philosophy and philosophers. More photos available on request for interested parties. Extra postage applies. SOLD
