Inuvik, Northwest Territories: Committee for Original Peoples Entitlement, 8 vo., 241 pp. 1st Edition. 1983. "Kangiryuarmiut" means "people of the large bay", Prince Albert Sound. These people are one of the three distinct linguistic groups of the Canadian Western Arctic Eskimo and they are centred in Holman on Victoria Island. At the time of the writing of this book, it was estimated that there were only about 125 fluent speakers of Kangiryuarmiutun (and about 200 each of the other two dialects "Siglirmiutun" and "Uummarmiutun"). It was an important step that this series of Eskimo dictionaries was produced since all three dialects had fallen into a classic pattern of language loss. This Kangiryuarmiut dictionary is divided into three sections: the Kangiryuarmiutun-English section with abt. 2300 of the most commonly used words and wordbases; a basic suffix list preceded by a short introduction and including 171 forms, fully annotated and illustrated, of lexical and enclitic suffixes; and finally, an English-Kangiryarmiutun section comprising over 2500 entries in alphabetical order. [4792] McLennan, Bill and Duffek, Karen. Transforming Image: Painted Arts of Northwest Coast First Nations . Vancouver and Seattle : UBC Press/University of Washington, Hard Cover. ISBN: 0295980249. Oblong 4 to., 291 pp. 1st Edition (2000). Using infrared rays, the Image Recovery Project team at the University of British Columbia was able to reveal the painted areas of many 19th century works of native art that had been obscured with a patina of oils and soot. A database of infrared photographs of historical Northwest Coast paintings was developed and forms the basis for this book. Since many of the bentwood storage boxes, chests, drums and other objects that were the "canvas" of 18th and 19th century artists have been scattered throughout the world, this book is the only means by which they can be viewed in one place. The written text complements these images and skilfully weaves together the fascinating strands of the story of this painted art. Included are images of contemporary Northwest artists as well. Dozens of illustrations in colour and many more in black-and-white. An intriguing study and significant research tool. Black cloth. Minor edgewear and light rubbing; o/w a VG+ copy in a VG pictorial d.j. with minor chipping and rubbing.
