6. Gudzowaty, Tomasz. Paradise Crossing. Yours
Photography, 2004. Printed in Switzerland, published
in Poland. World-renowned photographer and winner of
many prestigious prizes and awards, Tomasz Gudzowaty
chose as his subject here the unique gnu antelopes,
dwellers on the endless Serengeti plain. "Soon after
the last of the May rainstorms, the plain rapidly
changes into a dry and hostile wasteland. Migration
is the only way out. Following the evading rain, the
animal torrent flows eastward in the direction of
Lake Victoria, and then to the north, to the Masai
Mara Reservation in Kenya, where the rift wall stops
the very last of rains. The grazing doesn't continue
for long. Soon comes the time to go back, to be on
time for the opening of a new season in Paradise."
Cattle disease imported from Europe in the early part
of the 20th century decimated the gnu population down
to a few thousand, but in the latter half of the century,
their population once more exceeded a million.
Gudzowaty expertly captures the excitement, danger
and the immensity of the gnu migration in 50 amazing
full-page photographs. Leafing through the book is
akin to watching a full-length documentary on film.
