Ernest Nister Reprints
The originals of these fascinating moveables were printed
in the 1890's by Ernest Nister of London ("Wild Animal
Stories", orig. 1867). Nister was one of the great makers of
moveable books and his books which were filled with
illustrations that revolve and dissolve from one scene to
another with the pull of a tab are often regarded as the
most beautiful of the entire genre. The reprints
listed here for sale were published by Philomel Books,
N.Y., a division of The Putnam Publishing Group, unless
otherwise stated.
1) "Surprising Pictures for Little Folk". A selection
of poems, each accompanied by a circular picture with
parts that can be moved by a ribbon to reveal a new
picture. Sq. 8 vo., 12 pp., including 6 changeable
scenes. 1987. Later Philomel printing. Glossy pictorial
boards. Minor edgewear and rubbing; slight damage to
the rear board where a sticker has been removed; but

2) "Land of Sweet Surprises" consists of a selection of
poems, each accompanied by a circular picture with parts
that can be moved by a ribbon to reveal a new picture.

3) Merry Magic-Go-Round: a reproduction of an Antique Book of
Changing Pictures. Sq. 8 vo., 12 pp. including 5 changeable scenes.
(1983) Later Philomel printing. A very entertaining book: turn the
wheel on the side of the page, the figure shown in the left window
reappears in the right window with an additional character or
characters on top of it. Delightful verses from the original book

4) We Visit the Farm: reproductions of antique dimensional
