The great runner's own account of his running career, from his first discovery, as a schoolboy, of the joy of running, to his series of great victories in 1954. Roger Bannister was the first person to run a mile in under 4 minutes, and he repeated this to win the Empire Games in Vancouver, B.C. in August, 1954, edging out Australian John Landy who also completed the race in under 4 minutes. Landy had already set the world record for the mile with a time of 3 min. 58 sec. This special copy of Bannister's book is INSCRIBED by Landy in Sept. 1986, making this an important Association Copy. Abt. 8-1/2 x 11" tall, 222 pp. 1st Edition (2007) A collection of 100 sports episodes featuring "stars" of Vancouver's North Shore, many of them republished from Corben's series in the "North Shore Outlook", some with changes and additional photos. Corben states in his Preface that this book is: "...an attempt to better preserve 100 stories of our sporting past that should not be forgotten, while putting them in the contextof the rest of our history: the Great War, the Depression, World War II, society's changing values and the buildings, ferries and bridges that were part of the daily lives of those who lived there". As of the publishing date of this book, very few hockey fans could take exception with Howard Liss' choices for the all-time first and second all-star teams. Even today, some of these greats must still be considered for the same positions. First Team: centreman Jean Beliveau, with wingers Gordie Howe and Bobby Hull, plus defencemen Eddie Shore and Doug Harvey, with Terry Sawchuk in goal. Second Team: center Stan Mikita with wingers Maurice "Rocket" Richard and Ted Lindsay, along with defencemen Bobby Orr and Leonard Patrick "Red" Kelly, plus goalie Jacques Plante (as an old Montreal fan, I'd personally switch the goalies!). [4080] Roepke, Sharon L.. Diamond Gals: The Story of the All American Girls Professional Baseball League . Marcellus, MI: A.A.G.B.L. Cards, Abt. 5-1/2 x 8-1/2" tall, 24 pp. 1st Edition. n.d. (circa 1983). Spearheaded by the efforts of P.K. Wrigley (of Wrigley Field fame), women's baseball began in 1943 and professional teams continued playing until 1954. In the beginning, young women from all over the U.S. and the Canadian prairies were invited to try out for the four-team league. 75 women were sent from Regional tryouts to Wrigley Field for the final selection. 60 were chosen for the four teams. They were paid from $55 to $150 a week for a 125-game season. This proud auto company had one root of the family tree that sprang from Gustav Otto, son of Nikolaus August Otto, creator of the "Otto-cycle" from which all 4-stroke engines are derived; and another root came from the German town of Eisenach where in 1898 French Decauvilles were built under licence, and by way of Eisenach motor cars, competitors in the early 1900 inter city motor races, to Dixis and then Austin 7's.
